Dyslexia Info
John Murren, a teacher at The High School for Teaching and the Profession identified a student with learning differences that he believed may be dyslexia. John wanted to know what can be done to help this student.
Our Special Education Department teachers, Mrs. Attah, Mrs. Hassanbelliu,
Mr. Spooner and myself agreed that this student could be helped with interventions like Wilson Reading and services in the Resource Room but it will take time to get her certified for services.
In the mean time what I'd like to do is help all teachers develop strategies they can all use in all classes. We all have some ideas we can share. There are many resources but here are a few to open the discussion. Let's get the dialogue rolling!
Here are a few resources:

With the new regulation it will be very difficult, almost impossible to certify that student through an evaluation, only the principal has the right to recommend for an evaluation. Even then, teacher are supposed to provide documentations and data to the principal to justify how they have differentiated instruction in the classroom for that student. The process has to go under three different Tiers. Tier 1 - Teacher has to differentiate instruction for the student who is having dyslexia. Tier 2 - After data analysis, school can offer "at risk" resource room for six months. Tier 3 - no progress on student's acheivement - then all documentations should be shown to the principal and the team can start the evaluation process.
In cases like this (where the process is long), I will suggest you to involve the parent. Parent request for an initial evaluation is fast and can't be denied.
Thank you Neff for opening this blog. This site can be a resource site.

Mimoza,
You are a wealth of knowledge on the Regulations for Special Ed in NYC! Thanks for posting!
When you get a chance let me know what you think of the articles I set up links for. "LDOnline" is a really good resource for Parents, Students, Special Ed and General Ed teachers alike.
Their section on differentiated instruction is an excellent resource. I hope everyone especially our friends working in General Ed take a look at them .
